Why Choose Taekwondo?
The History of Taekwondo
What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a Korean Martial Art which traditionally equips practitioners with defensive tools to be used in unarmed combat. The Korean word has three components. ‘Tae’ translates to “Foot” or “leg”; ‘Kwon’ means fist or fight; and “Do” means “way” or “method”. It therefore translates to English as the “Foot-fist-way”. Taekwondo is a Martial Art whose roots date back over five thousand years. It can be broken down into five areas.

Taekwondo is underpinned by a philosophy pillared on five tenets of: Courtesy; Integrity; Perseverance; Self-Control; and Indomitable Spirit.
CourtesyPolite behaviour and excellent manners. Being considerate of others. |
IntegritySoundness of mind and being honest. |
PerseveranceThe ability to push through and NEVER give up! |
Self ControlThe abilty to dominate one's own actions and feelings. |
Indomitable SpiritA strong will, cannot be subdued or overcome. Unconquerable! |
Taekwondo is an “activity for survival in extremely antagonistic situations”. It is a pursuit of self-discovery and development with the objective of uniting for peace. Even with the ability from training to harness destructive force to defeat an enemy, there may be new enemies. Hence we must also train the mind for enhancement of our spirit and union with the body. That way we can obtain the permanent peace that comes from within. The motto of World Taekwondo - the Governing body for the sport - is that “Peace is more precious than triumph.”
It has evolved and survived over the millennia. Whilst the Traditional practice has survived, Taekwondo is most known today for its more popular evolution which is the Sporting aspect. Kyorugi or Sparring has evolved into an Olympic Sport, whilst Poomsae has also developed but has not yet reached Olympic status as a sport. The World Taekwondo is the global governing body for the sport, whilst Kukkiwon is the HeadQuarters for preservation of the Art.
